This weekend I'll go to a beading convention again, www.facettsthlm.se. I had my shop with me the last time at Facett.STHLM, but this time I'm "only" a participant. That will be nice for a change. Actually, it has already been nice. You sell a lot during one such weekend, but it requires weeks of preparations for a shop like mine that isn't designed to be portable. Now I've had time to improve the webshop instead. Anyway, I'll be there on Friday afternoon/evening and the whole day on Saturday at least. I haven't decided about Sunday yet, that depends on how tired I get of driving back and forth (I don't have a hotel room this time). There will be contests and workshops and a lot of bead-crazy people to talk to, so I expect it to be fun and inspiring.
I will attend a workshop on polymer clay bead making. I simply can't seem to limit the number of techniques I want to learn :-) Last year I saw a lampwork demo at Facett, and look where that has got me. Fortunately polymer clay equipment isn't nearly as expensive as lampwork equipment.

Let me open your mind!
If you want to make a professional corset, it's got to be coutil. And since baleen [whalebone] went out, it's got to be boned with steel. Right?
Weeeell, not exactly. You'd be surprised what you find out when you look at real nineteenth century corsets, which is exactly what I did on Friday.
I'm lucky enough to live within an hour of the Symington Collection's archive. I made an appointment to go and see real corsets up close, meaning that I spent six hours snapping photos furiously as the enormously helpful Cali just kept bringing me more and more armfuls of big blue archive boxes.
And when I opened those boxes with my little cotton gloves on [to protect the corsets from the oils on my skin], what did I see?

It's obvious when you think about it. Corsets have always been complex garments, but there was a time when everyone needed one, so we are by no means the first to try to find ways of making them economically. Symington's spent a lot of energy trying to make "affordable" corsets and they clearly succeeded both by being resourceful with materials and also by refining the processes by which corsets were made.
The "cane" corsets were actually made with a type of reed, and the finished garment was laced onto a hollow copper form that had steam forced through it, moulding the reeds (and thus the corset) into a shape that this example still holds today.
Now, Symingtons were mass-producing, which still makes what we do expensive in comparison, but if you've been tearing your hair out trying to find ways of reducing your prices to accommodate everyone (or yourself!) then you're not alone. If Symington's had had access to cable ties, they would undoubtedly have used them.

This one's a little dearer - some whalebone, some cording, and lots of cane. And just to make us all feel a little better about the fiddly bits... the points of their gussets were a bit ropey too.
And what about the coutil? You're going to have to take my word for it on this one because I don't have photos, but my good friend Jema showed me an original corset in her collection last week, and we both marvelled at the fabric. It was like cotton sheeting, so light and translucent, and one layer only! The difference, however, was that it was very densely woven fabric indeed, very strong and with no stretch whatsoever.
That's the key: it's got to be strong, non-stretch and densely woven. Coutil checks all those boxes, but that doesn't mean that it's the only thing that's any use for making an outstanding corset. Nor is steel the ONLY thing that can bone a serviceable, economically priced corset. So go, experiment. There is no rule that can't be tested and broken.

Marvellous mail!
Good grief, two posts in one day! Whatever next? Well, yes I know I already blogged today, but I received not one, but two parcels in the post since then, and just couldn't wait til tomorrow to share them with you - you know how excited I get about nice things in the post!
First was this gorgeous parcel of fabric that I ordered from Z&S. I had secretly told myself that I wouldn't place any more overseas orders until the exchange rates improved, but when I saw that they had the new Prints Charming fabrics in stock, coupled with 15% off, I just couldn't resist!
The pale turquoise fabric on top isn't Prints Charming - it's by Clothworks but don't ask me what it's called! - but is very lovely nonetheless. I think I might make another buttercup bag with it. I now have quite a collection of Prints Charming fabrics, certainly enough to make a quilt with! Perhaps I will, eventually, I'm not sure yet. For now I'm happy just looking at it all!!
Anyway, shortly after that there was a knock at the door and there was the parcelforce man with another package for me!
This enormous box was from Lissy Lou, my heart swap partner. Eventually, after much rummaging, I pulled out this little lot!
Ooh, how exciting! I very quickly ripped everything open and this is what was inside:
Some stickers, a set of heart cookie cutters, some pink jelly beans, chocolate hearts, loveheart sweets, some gift tags, some mini pegs with red hearts on and a very sweet fabric heart decoration. The chocolates and lovehearts made me laugh as I had sent the very same to Lissy Lou! Thank you Lissy Lou, this has been a great swap. This is what I made for her:
a soft fabric basket,
a beaded felt heart decoration,
and a fabric/felty brooch. I also sent some stickers, cupcake cases, clips and the sweets, but stupidly forgot to photograph all that until it was all nicely wrapped up! Never mind, I think she liked it all!

The Battlestar Galactica finale could have been much, much worse
Let me show you.
01) Galactica finds a new world, but the Cavil-led Cylons find them. The Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet and the Cylon forces gather high above the planet. "Open fire!" Adama and Cavil yell simultaneously -- cut to black. Credits.
02) Hera has been abducted. Adama leads his forces in a rescue mission, with lots of noise and fury...and painful results all around. Just as everything looks lost, Hera, the child of a Cylon and a Human, starts to glow...she's a Starchild! With her Starchild super powers in hand, Cavil is easily defeated, and things fixed. Glowing, the Starchild leads them all to a habitable planet.
03) The RTFF ends up at a new world. Landing, they investigate and discover that there's a small population already there. To their horror they discover that this isn't primitive hominid life-forms but the exiled detritus of the galaxy -- telephone sanitizers, beauticians, phonebook ad salesmen, etc. Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" plays as Adama (in a bathrobe) and Tigh wander about. [There's actually a nod to Hitchhiker's Guide in the finale -- look at what Romo Lampkin is wearing.]
04) Everybody except for Kara and Lee gets wiped out, but Kara and Lee make it to a habitable planet, which remarkably resembles a big beautiful garden. Yes, they're Adam and Eve! [Also getting a bit of a nod in the finale, in the tag.]
05) In the tag, the Angels are joined by a mysterious new figure as "Purple Haze" starts to play -- it's the Cylon God, played by Dirk Benedict! [This was actually the plan for "Kobol's Last Gleaming" and I can see it being mooted again...shot down because Dirk Benedict is pissed that Starbuck was turned into a woman in the reboot.]
06) All hell's breaking loose in the battle between the RTFF and the Cylons -- when the Lightship finally appears. Starbuck and Apollo are taken aboard and given shiny white uniforms. Kara is finally revealed as having become a Being Of Light.
07) Galactica arrives at Earth in the present day. Still pursued by the Cylons, they set up as the secret defender of the planet. Kara and Lee lead a special group that uses special fliers that morph into motorcycles. Every week Brother Cavil has a new devious plan that ends up narrowly averted.
08) Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) wakes up screaming in the sick bay of Galactica. "I had the craziest frakkin' dream," he tells Apollo (Richard Hatch.)
09) Battling the Cylon colony around the black hole, the Galactica ends up falling across the event horizon. Mysteriously, rather than being destroyed, everybody ends up in what appears to be either heaven or the sets of Pushing Daisies.

I don't quite understand why it just made me react the way that I did, but I just read that my best friend might be smoking weed now. She drinks again, and parties now, and she's doing it all without me. I didn't learn any of this was happening until after. Now she's planning on going to her first rave, and I doubt that she'll even tell me, so I won't even be there to experience it with her. My hands are shaking and my whole body feels weak. Thoroughly Weirded Out
So I told my little sister yesterday about the endowment ceremonies being on YouTube and stuff, expecting she would find it amusing, or be curious and want to see it. Instead she totally flips out and gets majorly offended that they would do something like that. And while she is going off, I'm sitting there thinking, "Holy crap, my sister's a Morgbot! How did I not know this?" For some perspective, she is almost 22, has at least five tattoos, has her ears peirced twice with one of the holes gauged (?sp) out, has had her nose, lip, tongue, and belly peirced, drinks alcohol, smokes, and is married, seperated, and sleeping with one of her old ex-boyfriends. She also lives in LA and was very unhappy about the church's position on Prop 8. India is a class conscious society where most people equate prosperity with the automobile while the bicycle is considered transportation for the poor. Only around 7% of Indians own automobiles and there are roughly as many small motor cycles on India's roads as bicycles. There are a billion Indians and most of them want a car. The bigger the car is, the more status the owner has. On main thoroughfares like the Grand Trunk Highway, Indian motorist have been known to hit poor cyclists and pedestrians and leave them lying along the road without offering assistance. There are almost no bike lanes or bike paths in India and the roads are often muddy full of pot holes.
On the other hand, India is a paradoxical country and full of contradiction. Many tourist that go to India say that the bicycle is still the best way to travel around the small towns and the country side of India, because there are few cars on the road. You go from village to village and from out door stand to stand and hardly ever encounter a car. They say that bicycling in India can be likened to riding through a giant outdoor market.
In the cities, techies in well paying jobs cycle to work. Most of them speak English and want to be westernized. These techies are demanding bike lanes in in districts like Bangalore’s high tech district. Who says that the west doesn’t have a positive influence on India?

for miss cleo ...
Mother ... my heart smiles when I think of my children and how they have grown. My almost 17 year old daughter is such a fascinating creature right now. I even told her that. Seeing the world through my children's eyes is the most wonderful part of being me.
Camp! ... oh my, where to start. Fall of '03. Only missed one camp since then and that was the year my mom died. She knew about my scene involvement and knew some my friends. I believe she would have wanted me to go to camp that year but I didn't, for the family. I think I missed out.
Books ... still love the smell and feel of them. I have never really gotten used to reading long things online. I doubt I will ever be the type to read entire texts on a small screen.
Intelligence ... if you mean me, thank you. If you mean how do I react to it? It's HOT!
strength ... I believe that my strength has come from adversity and just plain tough breaks. Someday, we will have to chat about the little things. I have always been an optimist; I don't know that you can be a strong pessimist. They seem contradictory to me.

Well, I must say that this journey that brought all of us here has made up grow quite a lot.

It was not easy I must say, there were many ups and downs.
Some got hurt but eventually learnt from it.
For me, this was a tough journey but I was glad to endure it with my teammates and my Coach.
And I am thankful that the team and Coach has allowed me to hold the captainship despite the many flaws I have.
You all have taught me too much to be pen down.
When one of us are on urge to give up, I am touched that everyone was there for each other.
It was so heartwarming, like about 50 degrees celcius?
All the inside jokes we shared.

Suddenly, we are all sec 4 and this year all of us are taking our major exams.
From the 12 of us, it became the 6 of us.
Thank God we all stayed hence getting our trophy man!

All the tough, torturous training we been through.
